Trip Highlights

  • On clear days, the mountain views are just spectacular. You can see Annapurna, Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, Langtang, Dorje Lakpa. Even some far-off peaks toward Everest show up sometimes.
  • There are the rhododendron forests. Phulchowki translates to Hill of Flowers, you know. In spring, March through April, everything bursts with color from those rhododendrons. They’re Nepal’s national flower, basically turning the whole place into a blooming wonder.
  • Birdwatching here is huge. Over 300 species hang out in the area. Sunbirds, woodpeckers, parakeets, all that. It’s a real hotspot for anyone into birds.
  • Up at the summit, there’s the Phulchowki Mai Shrine. Locals head there for pilgrimages during festivals. Small spot, but meaningful.
  • The hike usually kicks off from the Godavari Botanical Garden. That’s a nice area on its own to wander around, with all sorts of plants and paths.

Detailed Itinerary of Phulchowki Hike 1 Day

Day 01: Same Day Phulchowki hike

Drive from kathmandu to Godavari and  start hike in Godavari, which is roughly 14 km southeast of Kathmandu. The path goes up steadily through thick forests of rhododendron, oak, pine. Round trip takes 5 to 6 hours. Covers 12 to 14 km, depending on which way you go. It’s marked pretty well, but some parts get steep. A hiking stick helps out.

As you climb, the air cools down, feels fresher. The trees thin out eventually, opening to these wide viewpoints. At the top, hit the shrine, some prayer flags, communication towers. But the real draw is that 360-degree panorama of the Himalayas and the valley below.

Difficulty and best time to go.

It’s moderate overall. You need some stamina, but nothing technical like climbing gear.
